Welcome to the first installment of our new speaker spotlight series, where we pull back the curtain on the industry's most impactful voices to share their stories, strategies, and the reality of life on the road.

To kick things off, we are sitting down with Eddie Cortés, a highly sought-after motivational youth speaker and the author of I’m Possible: A Kid’s Guide To Building Resilience. For over 20 years, Eddie has been on a personal mission to empower students, transforming his own story as a former at-risk youth into a powerful catalyst for change. Here is a raw look at his journey, his mission, and the hard boundaries required to sustain a healthy speaking business.

“It started with a deeply personal wound. When I was in middle school, my ultimate dream of playing Major League Baseball was completely crushed by a cruel comment. But looking back, that moment was so devastating because it validated a painful lie I was already living with due to my father’s abandonment: the lie that I wasn’t “enough” and was unworthy of being loved.”

Believing that lie caused me to stop dreaming. My grades dropped, my relationships suffered, and my life choices as an at-risk student reflected that inner turmoil. Today, I know there are thousands of students sitting in school auditoriums believing that exact same lie. I realized I needed to get on stage to use my lived experience—and my transformation out of it—to reach kids who are stuck in that mindset.

THE DEFINING MOMENT

I realized I needed to get on stage to use my lived experience—and my transformation out of it—to reach kids who are stuck in that mindset. Every assembly is an opportunity to break that cycle of self-doubt and show students what is truly possible.

BUILDING ACTIVE RESILIENCE

In the education market, it's not enough to just tell a sad story and hope the audience feels inspired. You have to give them tools. I designed my I’M POSSIBLE school assembly program specifically to help students actively build resilience. I use a powerful blend of humor, engaging storytelling, and high-energy interactive moments so they aren't just listening; they are participating in their own breakthrough.

I don't just want a good assembly; I want to leave schools with a unified language around grit and self-worth that sparks conversations long after I leave. I teach them three actionable things: how to view failure as part of the journey, the immense power of self-belief, and exactly how to adopt a growth mindset.

“Failure is not the opposite of success; it is a critical stepping stone on the path to building true, lasting grit.”

A MISSION TO EMPOWER THE NEXT GENERATION

My mission is deeply personal because I was that student. I know exactly what it feels like to give up. That "why" directly dictates my audience: I intentionally partner with public and private schools across the U.S. to deliver youth assemblies because that is where the intervention needs to happen.

I purposefully meet middle and high school students exactly where they are. To do that, my approach has to be authentic and high-energy—kids can spot a fake a mile away. If I want to challenge them to push past their perceived limitations, I have to bring a level of passion that proves I genuinely understand what they are going through.

BOUNDARIES & ROUTINE

"Sharing a story that is raw and relatable about heavy topics like abandonment takes a massive emotional toll. To survive and thrive in this business, I operate with strict, family-first guardrails."

I physically block out my calendar for family birthdays, anniversaries, and important functions. Those are completely non-negotiable. To bridge the gap between road life and home life, I intentionally bring my wife, our daughter, or my mother, brother, and friends along with me on selected tour dates.

When I'm not speaking, I decompress by getting back to my routine—whether that's hitting a WOD at the CrossFit gym or stepping into the batting cages.

Maintaining those personal boundaries keeps my cup full so I can keep pouring into the students. By sharing the road and maintaining strict routines at home, the sacrifices of being a professional speaker remain manageable and the speaking business remains sustainable.

People assume being a professional speaker is a glorious lifestyle, much like being a pop star. The reality is that a pro speaker's career aligns much closer to being a public servant than a pop star. The 45 minutes I spend on stage rocking the mic is just a tiny fraction of the job. The actual routine is a grind. It means spending countless hours navigating rental cars, working out of sterile hotel rooms, rigorously perfecting your craft, and making the heavy sacrifice of being away from your family. It requires a true servant's heart to sustain that kind of rigorous schedule.
